RIDDING MY LABEL AS A FAMILY MEMBER

THE GOAL IS TO PROMOTE A HEALTHY OPEN DIALOGUE AND GET OUT OF A SHAME AND BLAME DYNAMIC WHICH OFTEN LEADS TO ONLY WORSENING ANY MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES WHICH OFTEN RESULTS IN SCAPEGOATING AND MORE GUILT AND SHAME. WE ENCOURAGE EMPATHIC, ACTIVE LISTENING AND GROUP DYNAMICS ALONG WITH COMPASSIONATE AND ACCOUNTABLE DIALOGUE. SELF-RESPONSIBILITY IS KEY TO TAKING BACK THE LEARNED HELPLESSNESS OFTEN ENCOURAGED BY THE CURRENT MODEL OF CARE.

  • As a family member of someone labeled mentally ill, I find myself being labeled by most doctors or health practitioners to discredit us. Medical records verify that any family member who attempts to "buck" the system is nullified and dismissed or misrepresented as interfering with treatment protocol when giving feedback and then labeled with a mental illness also. Shaming family members into learned helplessness is a common practice of psychiatry. We need family members to speak out about their experiences with the mental healthy system.
